On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • identify the tools and taxonomy of multimedia authoring, including data representations for images, video, and audio, vital aspects of colour
  • compare data compression technologies
  • apply multimedia communication and retrieval techniques and content-based retrieval in digital libraries.

Introduction to multimedia, multimedia authoring and tools, graphics and image data representations, colour in image and video, fundamental concepts in video, basics of digital audio, multimedia data compression, computer and multimedia networks, multimedia network communications and applications, content-based retrieval in digital libraries.

Lectures, tutorials and practical classes.

End of course unit examination, presentations and group assignments.
