HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify constitutes of health and organization of health systems
  • Recognize the need for systematic information processing in healthcare
  • Outline basic epidemiology and health statistics
  • Identify the information cycle and data quality in health domain
  • Appraise the principles of health information management
  • Practice data analysis and data mining on health information
  • Apply GIS in healthcare scenarios
  • Use medical coding and terminologies appropriately
  • Appraise ethical and security issues related to health information management.

Core concepts in population health metrics, disease surveillance, basic epidemiology and medical statistics, Health information architecture, information infrastructure, fragmentation and integration of health information, health information standards and terminology -SNOMED-CT, ICD 10, Archetype; Health Information Management – Information cycle and data quality, Managing information to deliver value and information for action, Data/indicator dictionaries and rationalization of health information, Improving data accessibility, Information systems management in health care; Implementation, scaling and capacity building; Evaluation and assessment of health information systems; Information systems and organisation, Change management, Business process re-engineering; GIS in health care; Fundamentals of spatial epidemiology, health cartography; Exploratory Spatial Data analysis (ESDA) and Spatio-temporal trends in health; Standards in GIS - GML, KML; Data visualization, information retrieval and knowledge management, data warehousing and data and text mining in medicine; Ethics and information security in health information management; Privacy and HIPAA regulations.

Lectures, case discussions, industry/field visits.

End of course unit examination, case study presentations and group assignments.
