HackX 2k17 was the successful second edi tion of the information technology orientedand innovation based hackathon where energetic, talented and vibrant undergraduates strived to compete towards the excellence, organized by the MIT undergraduates of University of Kelaniya. The hackathon itself was organized in parallel with the launch of 13th issue of the magazine ‘Exposition’, a platform for many young innovators to display their talents in programming, designing, developing and commercializing. Out of hundred plus applications called upon through the official website, 15 most innovative ideas were chosen for the elegant grand finale held at Dialog Axiata auditorium as an overnight event on September 15 and 16, which included a 12-hour continuous coding/developing session followed by final pitch presentations. Dialog Ideamart, Orange IT, Wild Elephant, Readme.lk, SLASSCOM, Hackathons.lk and Loons Lab were the partners of hackX 2k17.
A distinguished panel of Judges comprised of experienced industry experts evaluated final presentations of the teams and three best teams were awarded for their astounding performance at the event. Team EchonLabs of University of Jayawardhanapura became the Winner of the competition while, Team Apocalypse of University of Colombo, School of Computing and HeliumX of National School of Business Management (NSBM) became the 1st and the 2nd runners-up consecutively.
Certifcate awarding ceremony of ‘Sustainability Leadership’ training program and ‘Naturalia-2016’ was held recently and level 4 undergraduates: D.A. Silva and D.D. Gamage received trophies and certifcates for the best performance in the ‘Naturalia’ Quiz Competition.
Choxmi Sathsara and Erandi Ganepola from Level 4 MIT, were selected for the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) Program 2017, where each of them successfully completed a three months programming project with an open source organization. Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on introducing students to open source software development and, has brought together more than 118 countries worldwide
Erandi Ganepola and Prabodhika Karunarathne from Level 4 MIT, got selected for the “Seeds for Future” technological training program offered to ten selected undergraduates from island wide state universities. This was held in Shenzhen, China in collaboration with the Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, Sri Lanka and Huawei Headquarters, Shenzhen, China.
“Rasogha” Musical Eve organized by the Department of Industrial Management was held on the 7th December 2016 from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm at the department premises. The event was organized with the intention of showcasing the aesthetic talents of the staff as well as the students and also to enhance the rapport among the students and staff. Many students and staff members participated in the event to exhibit their vocals and instrumental talents.
The annual IMSSA Community Service Project was successfully held on the 9th and 10th of March 2017 at Bandarawela Wellawaya Gampaha Vidyalaya. The project had the participation of the students of the school from grade 1-11 where seminars were conducted in the areas of Mathematics, Science, English, Scholarship Examination and Personal Progress Development. Stationary items, gifts and participation certifcates were given to all the participants. A collection of Musical Instruments was also provided to the school along with donations for the Library books for the School Library. Furthermore, the classrooms were renovated and tap water facilities were provided to the entire school.
The Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya took part in organizing an Industrial Forum on 29th March 2017. The event was organized by the Industrial Management Science Students’ Association (IMSSA) with the collaboration of Industrial Management Alumni Association (IMAA). The forum was focused on educating undergraduates about the importance and the employability of the available specialization programs and fnding internship opportunities for third year undergraduates. The alumina members from different areas of industrial expertise shared their experiences in the working arena, and guided the undergraduates towards their future plans. The event was a successful interactive session with the participation of all the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year batches who intend to succeed in their future professional careers. The program had a fruitful outcome in identifying their skills and knowledge in different areas. IMAA put together an impressive agenda to make the undergraduates actively participate in this signifcant event.
The annual musical concert “Spandana” organized for the second consecutive year by the Industrial Management Science Students’ Association (IMSSA) on the 28th October 2016 at Sri Dharmaloka Hall, University of Kelaniya. The concert was held in order to raise funds for the CSR program carried out by the IMSSA at the Bandarawela/Wellawaya Gampaha Vidyalaya. Renowned artists of Sri Lanka; Mr. Amarasiri Peiris, Ms. Nirosha Virajini and Mr. Athma Liyanage performed at the concert. The concert featured the musical performances of the band Sumith Priyankara and crew while the event was hosted by “Indrasiri Suraweera”.
University of Kelaniya shines at INFOTEL, one of the nation’s biggest ICT exhibitions held at the BMICH from 11th of November to 13th. The Department of Industrial Management showcased IoT-based Smart Systems designed and developed by the students of B.Sc. Degree in Management and Information Technology (MIT). It was a successful endeavor with the assistance extended by the Senior Professor Sunanda Maddumabandara, the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Dr. Deeyamulla, Director of Technology Support and Innovation Centre, and the staff of Export Development Board. These innovative IoT based smart systems were emerged from the 3rd InCo 2016 Invention Convention launched by the Department of Industrial Management earlier in 2016.
