IM Undergraduates at HackaDev

'HackaDev', as a part of the National Software Competition took place at University of Ruhuna on 6th and 7th of October 2017. Team 'Zeroth', representing the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya emerged to be the winners. Shilpa Gunawardhana, Chathura Ranawaka, Maleesha Ranawaka, Dumindu De Silva and Aneesha Fernando were the members of team 'Zeroth' of level 2. The “Inglorious Masters” was teamed up with Sathindu Kavneth, Choxmi Sathsara, Lahiru Koggalahewa and Binujaya Rajatheja of level 4 which also emerged as the second runner up.


IFS 20th anniversary hackathon, CODE COMBAT was held on the 28th of October 2017. Challenges consisting virtual robots within a virtual robot framework was provided for the battle. 15 teams from different universities participated, and the Team Strikers consisting 5 MIT undergraduates: Choxmi Sathsara (Level 4), Rameela Azeez (Team leader - Level 3), Chiran Wijesekara (Level 3), Pasan Pieris (Level 2) and Charinda Dissanayake (Level 2) emerged as the winners

MIT undergraduates emerged as the winners at Sri Lanka’s first Fintech Hackathon

The Kaffeine Lab, Nations Trust Bank's (NTB) innovation centre came alive recently as the Bank to host the first Fintech Hackathon in the country. Approximately among 150 teams from across Sri Lanka, the best 16 were selected to compete in the final round. The team, 'Tech Devs' (Kalpa Wijesooriya, Gimhana Kaldera, Benuka Withanage and Dumindu De Silva from Level 2 MIT) with their idea for Online Auctioning Platform, "BIDME", an android application developed for banks to auction the overdue pawned items, were the ultimate winners of the Nations Trust Fintech Hackathon 2017, with a cash prize of LKR 250,000/- and a business loan worth LKR 1 million at a discounted rate of interest.

Biz Minds 2017 – Inter University Business Plan Competition

The Inter-University Business Plan Competition (Biz Minds 2017) was held on the 5th of July 2017 at A. T. H. Sunil Shantha Memorial Auditorium of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya. This competition was organized by the Young Entrepreneurs’ Association of the Department of Commerce & Financial Management, University of Kelaniya. The candidates representing the University of Kelaniya, University of Ruhuna, University of Jaffna, University of Moratuwa and the University of Sri Jayawardenapura participated in this competition. Out of 74 teams, the championship was won by team ‘Bazoora’ of the level 4 MIT undergraduates which comprised Supun Fernando, Shiran Silva, Chiran Wijesekara and Rajitha Abeysekara. Shilpa Gunawardhana, Erandika Lakmali, Gimhana Kaldera, Sachini Yashoda from 2nd year were also one of the finalist teams in the competition.

MIT undergraduates dominated Inspire Sri Lanka

Inspire Sri Lanka with Google I/O 2017 extended Sri Lanka is a competition for innovators who are passionate about utilizing technology for a better tomorrow, powered by Mobitel was held on 17th and 18th of May 2017 at Stein Studios, Ratmalana. Team Hustlers (Ahmed Ifhaam, Vikum Perera, Thiriyambaga Sarma, Rameela Azeez and Madhushani Dissanayake) and Team Verzians (Asanka Basnayake, Chiran Wijesekara, Rajitha Abeysekara, Shiran Silva and Supun Fernando) from Level 03 MIT got shortlisted for the top 5 teams. Team Addah (Darshatha Gamage, Binujaya Rajatheja, Sathindu Kavneth, Choxmi Sathsara and Lahiru Koggalahewa) from Level 04 of the MIT degree program was also shortlisted for top 18 innovative ideas.


The event was organized by SLASSCOM Sri Lanka together with Zebra Technologies, the Grand Finale of Disrupt 2.0: FutureX took place at the Trace City premises on the 9th of December 2016. Team ‘CatchMe’, representing the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, was selected to the final round. The team was comprised of Janaka Senanayake, Malith Suraweera, Anojan Kaneshathas and Thimitha Gamage from Level 4 of the BSc. (Special) degree in 2016.

MAS Award for the Most Outstanding Student of the Year

Mr. Malith Suraweera, Level 4 (Special Degree) undergraduate in BSc. in Management and Information Technology, won the award for the most outstanding student of the year at MAS awards ceremony for the year 2016. Miss. Taniya Leuwwanduwage, Level 4 (Special Degree) won the first runner up while Miss. Lakruwini De Zoyza, Level 04 (Special Degree) was awarded as the second runner up. Annually, MAS Holdings Pvt Ltd recognizes and rewards most academically gifted and exceptionally motivated students from local universities. This is awarded not only for the undergraduates’ academic excellence, but also for taking initiatives to acquire other competencies essential for the corporate world such as soft skills, extra-curricular and community service activities.

Sahasak Nemavum – 2016

Mihira Bandara and Suresh Abeweera - Undergraduates of the Department of industrial Management won the 3rd place at the Sahasak Nemavum competition organized by the Sri Lanka New Inventors’ Commission. They were recognized and awarded for their product – a multipurpose convenient bed. Their talents in the infrastructure technologies and applications were highlighted and appreciated by the judges. They were able to succeed as the winners for the same product at the New Inventions Competition organized by the University of Kelaniya in 2015. This was regarded as one of the best solutions for the lack of space in temporary residences such as university hostels. This can be used as a bed as well as a table where it can keep books and belongings as well. This product consisted of a bed, a table, a chair and lockers where to keep things safely. This is a product that could be used for various purposes in under space constraints.
